What is Earth Block Construction?

Built from the Earth Beneath Our Feet

At Peaceful Waters, our walls quite literally come from the land itself.

We use compressed earth blocks—a sustainable, breathable building material made from a mix of local soil, clay, sand, and a touch of water. Each block is pressed using a manual machine, no kilns or high energy needed. It’s simple, ancient technology with a modern purpose: creating healthy, grounded spaces that last.

Walls built from earth blocks help keep indoor spaces an even, comfortable temperature year-round.

STEP 1 – From the Land

We use locally sourced soil – gathered from the surrounding region. With a press and a little muscle, the earth is compressed into uniform blocks – dense, strong, and ready to dry in the sun.

STEP 2 - Wall Construction

The blocks are stacked and mortared by hand, forming thick, insulating walls that regulate temperature naturally.

STEP 3 – Goat Testing

We’re required to conform to rigorous goat standards, so we perform extensive testing.

STEP 4 – Stucco Finish

A protective lime plaster is applied – allowing the walls to breathe while shielding them from the elements.

STEP 5 – Enjoy!!

The photos make it look quick, but construction took 2 years!! Now guests of Peaceful Waters get to reap the benefits. 😎

Why Earth Blocks?

We were delighted to host earthen construction wizard Jim Hallock, CEO of Earth Block International as we laid our first bricks for the Peaceful Waters Retreat Center. In the video below, Jim describes his journey to earthen construction and dives into its many important benefits that can lead us into a brighter future.

“Earth Block started as a quest for a non-toxic, environmentally safer way to build. It’s become my passion, my life’s mission — making the future out of the past.”

Jim Hallock, Founder and President of Earth Block International
